Camping Ground not pegged back in Fontwell’s National Spirit

Camping Ground was an impressive 29 length winner of the Grade Two National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell on Sunday on his first start for trainer Gary Moore.

Ridden by Joshua Moore, the seven-year-old son of Goldneyev shared the lead with Paul Nicholls’ Adrien Du Pont early on in the two-miles and three furlongs but quickly got away from his other rvials and was away and gone approaching the home turn.

9/1 shot Camping Ground kept on well for Moore’s urgings with the rest of the field stretched out in behind. Le Rocher (9/2) was second, 22 lengths ahead of 2/1 joint-favourite L’Ami Serge back in third. Different Gravey, stable companion of L’Ami Serge was bitterly disappointing and was pushed along early on by Nico de Boinville, seemingly never travelling.

Camping Ground was having his first start for local trainer Moore, having formerly been trained by Robert Walford, for whom he won the Grade Two Reelkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham in January 2016.

This was an impressive performance from the French-bred gelding who seemed to enjoy the soft conditions underfoot and travelled with his usual zest up front.

Moore’s charge seems likely to pitch up at the Cheltenham Festival in two weeks time. He holds an entry for the Coral Cup, a Grade Three handicap hurdle over two and a half-miles and in the Grade One Stayers’ Hurdle over three miles, for which he is a general 16/1 shot.
