Geraghty misses Cheltenham through injury

Irish jockey Barry Geraghty has been ruled out of the Cheltenham Festival after revealing that he has suffered “a collapsed lung and six broken ribs” following a fall from Nicky Henderson’s Charli Parcs in the Adonis Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday.

Geraghty was lined up for an enviable book of rides at the Cheltenham Festival, including stayers’ hurdle favourite Unowhatimeanharry, Triumph Hurdle favourite Defi Du Seuil and had to choose between Buveur D’Air and Yanworth in the Champion Hurdle.

However, the Irishman will now have to sit out the Festival, meaning he must wait till 2018, if he is to add to his 34 Cheltenham Festival successes which have come courtesy of great champions including Kicking King, Moscow Flyer, Sprinter Sacre and Bobs Worth.

In a cruel twist of fate for Geraghty, his injury now opens the door for a number of potential jockey’s including Mark Walsh and Aidan Coleman to take advantage of Geraghty’s demise by riding some of his most fancied mounts in the famous green and gold silks

Speaking to At The Races, Geraghty remarked:

I’ve a collapsed lung and six broken ribs on my right side. I’m obviously devastated to miss the Festival – there were so many good horses to look forward to as JP’s (McManus) team all look in particularly good shape this year.

Last night was pretty rough. I’ve broken ribs individually before but never had six go all at the same time. I’ll be in hospital for a few more days but once the lung improves my recovery should be straightforward and I expect to be back for Aintree.
