Swinburn bathroom fall caused death of Shergar’s rider

Walter Swinburn, rider of Shergar and one the finest jockeys of his generation, died following an accidental fall from his bathroom window in his home in central London.

At an inquest held at Westminster Coroner’s Court into the cause of death, it was revealed that the former jockey suffered a fatal head injury on December 12 2016. Whilst Swinburn had epilepsy, the court was unable to decipher whether this was the cause of the incident.

A coroner office said: “He had fallen from his bathroom window. The drop was estimated at about 12 feet, and it was into a courtyard.

“It was confirmed that Mr Swinburn suffered from epilepsy, but whether or not he had an epileptic fit which caused him to fall, was not possible to determine.”

Swinburn rode three Derby winners in a glittering career: Shergar, Shahrastani and Lammtarra and also achieve other big-race successes in contests including the King George, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Breeders’ Cup Turf. Swinburn was also famed for his partnership with trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

Following his retirement in 2000, Swinburn became a trainer himself, saddling over 250 winners before revoking his licence in 2011 due to a lack of finance.
