The Portobello Cup result at Musselburgh on Tuesday 25 August went the way of Gallus Norman, who came home three and a quarter lengths clear of Fast Fred in the 3.45 under Amie Waugh. The nine-furlong-and-more specialists were left behind by a 14/1 shot trained at Uplawmoor by Jim Goldie.
The winning time over 2m2f on good ground was 3m 56.98s, and the margin left no argument about the strongest stayer in the field. Off an official mark of 66, Gallus Norman was giving weight away all round and still recorded a performance rating of 68, collecting £10,468.
Gallus Norman Hands Jim Goldie A Portobello Cup Result To Savour
Goldie also saddled the third and fourth, Trojan Sun (8/1) and Furhaan (15/2), while Fast Fred, an 11/1 chance for Phillip Makin and Sam James, was the only runner from another yard to get within seven and a half lengths of the winner. The 4/1 favourite Vaguely Royal, representing Ian Williams, weakened into sixth, beaten nine and three-quarter lengths.
The stamina test we flagged in our morning preview of the Portobello Cup duly told; we did not advise a selection in the race itself. Elsewhere Andrew Mullen rode a double, taking the 3.15 on Dalamara at 10/1 for Ben Haslam and the 4.15 on Novak at 7/2 for Iain Jardine.
Tim Easterby ended the day with two winners, Inns And Out (7/1, Jason Hart) in the opening maiden and Albegone (6/1, Jake Dickson) in the closing sprint, the latter holding Beerwah by a short head. The Portobello Cup result caps a profitable afternoon for Goldie’s staying string.
