## **Jan Brueghel and Calandagan on course for Epsom rematch**

Calandagan and Jan Brueghel are on course to renew their rivalry in the Coolmore Coronation Cup at Epsom on Saturday after both featured among the latest confirmations for the Group 1.

The race has moved onto [Epsom Derby day](https://readhorseracing.com/2026/06/01/epsom-derby-betting-odds/) this year and carries a substantially increased prize fund, adding further focus to a contest that already has a strong sporting hook.

With the 2026 winner set to bank £560,200.

Last year’s Coronation Cup was decided by half a length, with Aidan O’Brien’s Jan Brueghel holding off Francis-Henri Graffard’s Calandagan.

Calandagan has since built one of the strongest profiles in the older-horse division.

At The Races reported that he has not been beaten since last year’s Epsom defeat, while Racing Post noted his sequence of five straight Group 1 victories in four different countries since that reverse.

Including in the Japan Cup and Sheema Classic (watch below).

### **Ballydoyle team gives race added depth**

Jan Brueghel returned this spring with victory in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester, a run that put him back on track for a defence of his Coronation Cup crown.

O’Brien also has Lambourn and Illinois in the confirmed field.

Lambourn brings another high-profile Epsom angle as last year’s dual Derby winner, while Illinois gives Ballydoyle another older middle-distance option.

The confirmed field is not limited to the headline pair.

Racing Post listed Bay City Roller, Convergent, Sunway and See The Fire among the other remaining contenders.

While [Sporting Life’s racecard](https://www.sportinglife.com/racing/racecards/2026-06-06/epsom-downs/racecard/911889/coolmore-coronation-cup-group-1) also showed a wider live racecard picture for the 1m4f6y Group 1 before final declarations.
