Kentucky Derby Result 2026: Golden Tempo Speeds Home Under Jose L Ortiz
The 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby was a battle of the Ortiz brothers as jockeys Irad and Jose went toe-to-toe up the Churchill Downs straight.
But it was Jose L Ortiz that came out on top (just) at the line as the guided the Cherie DeVaux-trained GOLDEN TEMPO to come with a storming late run to win the $5m race.
The win also provided Jose L Ortiz with a first Derby win, while Cherie DeVaux became the first women to train the Kentucky Derby winner.

How Much Will The 2026 Kentucky Derby-Winning Jockey Jose L Ortiz Earn?
Under the 2026 Kentucky Derby rules, any jockey finishing fourth or lower receives a minimum $500 riding fee.
Of course, the real money sits at the top end. The leading riders earn significantly more.
Roughly 80% of the Derby prize money goes to the winning owner, with the remainder split between the trainer and jockey.
For the winner, both the rider and the stable typically take 10% of the purse.
So, with $3,100,000 awarded to the 2026 Kentucky Derby winner, the jockey’s share comes in at $310,000-not a bad return for just a few minutes in the saddle.
That said, it’s not all theirs to keep.
From that amount, the jockey still pays their agent and valet-usually around 25% to the agent and 5% to the valet, depending on the agreement.
Once those deductions are made, it leaves the winning jockey Jose L Ortiz with roughly £217,000 to declare to the taxman.
Next Up For Golden Tempo Could Be A Tilt At The Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes
We last saw a US Triple Crown winner in 2018, when the Bob Baffert-trained Justify landed all three prestigious races.
The son of Scat Daddy become only the thirteen US Triple Crown winner – and was the first since American Pharoah in 2015, who was also housed at the Baffert barn.
If he is to take in the next Triple Crown race, the Preakness Stakes will be on Saturday 16th May. And run at Laurel Park this season with Pimlico being refurbished.
Then the Belmont Stakes will be staged on June 6th – again this year at Saratoga, with Belmont also still under redevelopment.
2026 Kentucky Derby Favorite Renegade Finishes Second
This year’s Kentucky Derby saw three co-favorites at 5/1 – Renegade, So Happy and Commandment.
But despite the market confidence from punters none of the trio could win. With the Todd Pletcher-trained Renegade coming out best in second.
Meaning the last winning Derby favorite still remains Justify in 2018.
Still No Kentucky Derby Winner From Gate One Since 1986
Many felt the well-fancied Renegade, who was an impressive winner of the Arkansas Derby this season, would be able to overcome gate 1.
With his backers, including NBC handicapper Eddie Olczyk, suggesting this hold-up style will eradicate the low gate, that hasn’t seen a winner since Ferdinand in 1986.
However, the Todd Pletcher runner could only manage a close second. But did get heavily bumped leaving the gates, which may have cost him the race at the business end.
Meaning the 40 year wait for a Kentucky Derby winner from post position 1 continues.
Kentucky Derby Gate 2 Still Winless Since 1978
Like gate 1, the Derby post position 2 has also need been a lucky berth in recent times.
The last winner from the second-lowest gate was Affirmed in 1978, who when into win the Triple Crown.
This year the Riley Mott-trained Albus was burdened with stall 2, but like the last 48 horses – failed to win.
The Wait For A Derby Winner From Post Position 17 Goes On
Strangely the Kentucky Derby is still to see a winner from gate 17 – the hoo-doo post position that has a stack of history against it.
And this run carried on after the 152nd renewal, with the Kentucky Derby result telling us the horse from stall 17 (Six Speed) could only manage ???
Maybe the run will finally end in 2027.
