1:45 – Betfred Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (4yo+) 6f ITV

This Andrew Balding runner DOUBLE RUSH caught my eye the last day with a facile win here at Newmarket – winning by 4 3/4 lengths.

Up just 5lbs for that and despite the yard being a bit quieter at the moment I’ll take this improving 4yold to improve the Kingsclere recent stats.

We know the track will suit, plus tackles the same ground and trip today – so in his present mood it’s hard to

Shane Foley, who has ridden the horse in the past takes over from Oisin Murphy, who instead gets the leg-up on the Stephen Thorne Irish raider Sir Les Patterson.

While the consistent Addison Grey looks sure to in the shake-up after a good return run (2nd) at Newbury.

But there’s every chance the pick is a Listed or Group performer still running at Handicap level – so Double Rush is taken to be ‘too quick’ here.

2:20 – Betfred Suffolk Stakes (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 1m1f ITV

Recent Newmarket winner Mister Winston will draw the eye with Oisin Murphy booked to ride – he beat Arasaig, who goes at Goodwood on Saturday too (2:05pm).

But is up another 5lbs here and despite tipping a Balding horse in the previous race, the yard are a tad quiet at the mo.

Bullet Point fired in a couple of big handicap wins at York and Newmarket last season, but this won’t be easy off 105 and 9st-12lbs to carry.

While the 6yold Botanical was a cracking 4th last time in the Lincoln and should be better for that first run back off the same mark.

However, with 16 of the last 20 winners aged 4 or 5, that Karl Burke runner is overlooked in terms of the win, but I can see him in the mix.

The Aland King horse Alcarath ticks several of the key trends (age and weight) and could be interesting with only four career runs.

A chance, however, is taken on the Richard Hannon runner AL ARBEED, who I thought stayed on well the last day at Musselburgh over 7f.

Now, he’s up in trip here to 1m1f, so there is some unknowns regarding the distance, but was doing good late work that last day to suggest it’s worth a crack.

The added plus is the form of that race has been franked many times since. The winner Bellarchi has gone in again, with the 6th Persuasion and even the 8th A War Eagle both winning since too.

Dropped a pound too and draw 7 looks ideal with 6 of the last 8 coming from gates 2-7.

  • Just 2 winners from stalls 1 or 2 in the last 17 runnings

2:55 – HKJC World Pool Palace House Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo+) 5f ITV

Last season’s Abbaye and Nunthorpe winner Asfoora is the class horse in the race and with Oisin Murphy riding she’ll be popular on what is her first start for Lemos De Souza.

But she has to give weight away all round and isn’t getting any younger at 7.

I expect the speedy Quinault to take them along at a fair lick again.

And last season’s favourite for this race Washington Heights (4th) could be over-priced.

FIVE WAYS is another horse I liked last season – winning twice at Salisbury and Kempton – and then rounded off 2025 with a fair 4th in the G1 Middle Park.

He’s still only 3 and could have more to come this term.

But we’ve also got last year’s winner of this race RUMSTAR back for more.

This Jonathan Portman runner won this prize first time out 12 months ago and with the yard in fair form can do so again.

He loves Newmarket too – heading here 2-from-2 and gets a handy 4lbs from Asfoora, which means he’s only got a pound to find on the ratings with last season’s Nunthorpe winner.

Rumstar can shine in the Palace House for a second year.

3:35 – Betfred 2000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1) (No Geldings) Cl1 (3yo) 1m ITV

A decent renewal of the first of the English Classic races this season and the 2000 Guineas trends tell us 20 of the last 24 winners were drawn 12 or lower.

Which could be a negative for likely Guineas favourite Bow Echo, who has been handed gate 15.

Last year’s Royal Lodge winner will be looking to become the first horse to follow-up in this race since the mighty Frankel.

He’s certainly impressed me, but the form of his last win has been knocked a tad with the third Action beaten at odds-on in the Classic Trial at Sandown recently.

Last season’s Dewhurst second Gstaad was supplemented for the race and will be looking to give Aidan O’Brien an eleventh success in the race – but his first since Magna Grecia in 2019.

Gstaad probably brings the best form into the race after this second in the Dewhurst and then winning at the Breeders’ Cup.

Draw 7 is fine too and Ryan Moore rides – it will be a shock if he’s not in the shake-up.

The stats also tell us the Gosden yard are still to win the Guineas – they try and put that right with Craven Stakes winner Oxagon.

He’ll be looking to be the first Craven/Guineas winner since Haafhd in 2004.

Godolphin To Dominate Guineas

However, the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin have dominated the Guineas in recent times – winning three of the last four (6 total) – and are the call to do so again.

I think their unexposed KING’S TRAIL is interesting. Yes, he’s up in grade but connections clearly feel he’s up to the task.

He’s 2-2 after wins at Kempton and one of the horses he beat on debut back in December (Knights Charge) bolted up at Lingfield earlier this week.

James Doyle won the 2000 Guineas for Godolphin in 2022 with Corebus too. Draw 13 is the small worry though.

So the slightly safer option is DISTANT STORM, who was 3rd in the Dewhurst (Gstaad 2nd).

But I feel the step up to a mile (from 7f) can see him overturn that form – doing all his best work at the finish that day.

That is rock-solid form for me.

Charlie Appleby will have him fine-tuned for his return run and the yard (with William Buick) have won the last two renewals.

There’s a lot to like – so I’ll take Distant to ‘Storm’ home and King’s Trail to also run a big race.
