Exclusive: Michael Owen Reflects On Chester Cup Win & Debut Hopes Of Andy Robertson-Owned Horse

The second part of our exclusive interview with Michael Owen is here as the ex-footballer exclusively revealed a debut horse to look forward to and also reflects on Zoffee’s famous Chester Cup win.

Michael Owen Reflects On ‘Special’ Chester Cup Win

The Chester Cup is one of the biggest races that Chester host throughout the flat season and was first run in 1824.

And on the 200th anniversary of the race, Michael Owen and Hugo Palmer won it with Zoffee in what was an emotional success.

It was such a special victory as Zoffee had finished second by just a neck in 2023, so winning the race in 2024 was huge for the yard.

Owen, who represents Casino.org, a leading platform helping players find UK casino brands was speaking exclusively to Read Horse Racing.

RHR: Was Zoffee’s win in the 2024 Chester Cup for the yard still one of the best things you’ve achieved in racing?

Michael Owen:Yes, definitely. We don’t usually train horses for the Chester Cup distance, so Zoffee winning was a great achievement for everyone connected with the yard, the owners as well.

And to win this race, at the home of the festival so close to him is very special indeed. It was a great moment for us all.

Zoffee would also go on to finish third in the Chester Cup last season (2025). He may be back for another spin in the race this year, but entries are not yet open.

Andy Robertson Horse Is One To Look Out For At Chester May Festival

Football and horse racing often go hand-in-hand with many ex-professional players involved in the sport.

And Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson is the latest to get involved. He’s part owner of an exciting young horse that Owen is relishing the opportunity to debut at Chester.

RHR: Will you or Hugo Palmer be having anything to look out for there at the Chester May Festival?

Michael Owen: From our stable of horses, we have one which we are excited about which is a horse called Ancient Geordie, which actually is part owned by Andy Robertson of Liverpool.

So we’re just looking at which race we will enter, but that is one to watch for sure.”

When Is The Chester May Festival?

The Chester May Festival will take place from Wednesday 6th May to Friday 9th May 2026.

Potential races for Ancient Geordie include any maiden races at Chester throughout the Festival.

Hugo Palmer’s two-year-olds are off to a good start already this season. Adaay Of Scarlett won in impressive fashion at the recent Newmarket Craven meeting.
