Dewhurst hero and 2,000 Guineas hopeful Gewan has sadly passed away after sustaining a fatal injury during a Kempton Park gallop.
Gewan Dies Ahead Of Tilt At 2,000 Guineas
Andrew Balding’s leading two-year-old from last season Gewan has sadly passed away after getting injured during a Kempton gallop.
Gewan was crowned Europe’s champion two-year-old after being given a mark of 121 for last season’s heroics.
He made a winning start in fine fashion at Newbury last July before going on to triumph in the Acomb at York.
Things didnt quite go to plan on his next start at Doncaster in the Champagne Stakes but he soon made up for it when winning the Dewhurst at Newmarket at the end of the season.

He would join the likes of Frankel, City Of Troy, Too Darn Hot and Pinatubo on the Dewhurst roll of honour.
That Newmarket success made him one of the leading players for the upcoming 2,000 Guineas, but sadly the race will now be run without him.
Gewan was a general 7/1 shot for the first Classic of the season and he was ready to have a prep run at Newbury next weekend in the Greenham Stakes.
Andrew Balding Confirmes Gewan Death With Heartfelt Statement
“It is with extreme sadness that we report Gewan, champion two-year-old of 2025, has suffered a fatal accident whilst having a racecourse gallop at Kempton this morning.
“The vets were on site and attended to the horse immediately but sadly he could not be saved.
“Our thoughts are with Mr Zhang and his family who owned Gewan, James Doyle who was riding the horse and is luckily uninjured and Marie Perrault who has looked after the horse since he arrived at Kingsclere and rides him every day.
“We will never forget his brilliance when taking the Dewhurst in such impressive style and we were so looking forward to seeing what he could achieve during his three-year-old career.
“Racing is full of high days and low days and unfortunately this is very much one of the latter.”
