Justify on course for Triple Crown after Preakness Stakes win

Justify is now just one win away from joining the greats of American racing after victory in the 143rd Preakness Stakes, BBC report.

After winning the Kentucky Derby on 6th May and the Preakness Stakes, Justify is edging closer to becoming the 13th horse to win US flat racing’s Triple Crown.

On a murky and rain-soaked Pimlico racecourse in Baltimore, Justify, ridden by 52-year-old Mike Smith, was pressed all the way by Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic.

The 1-2 favourite just had enough at the end to take the win, in front of a crowd of 134,487.

As a result of Justify’s win, trainer Bob Baffert matched D Wayne Lukas’s record of 14 victories in the Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

The Belmont Stakes on 9th June is the race Justify needs to win to take the Triple Crown title, with American Pharoah the last horse to complete the treble three years ago.
