Promising amateur jockey handed two-year ban after positive drug test

Luke McGuinness, an amateur jockey, has been given a two-year ban by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board after testing positive for traces of cocaine, the Racing Post report.

McGuinness submitted a random urine sample at Navan in November which came back positive.

The jockey has not ridden in public since being made aware of the positive result and has admitted taking the substance. He has since put out a statement explaining how the incident has brought shame on him, his family and the sport.

McGuinness has been pointed out as a promising jockey by many and has ridden nine winners for Gordon Elliott, picking up 14 wins in total to date.

The matter will again be looked at in six months provided McGuinness cooperates fully with a rehabilitation programme set up for him.

Irish Grand National-winning jockey Ger Fox has also recently been tested positive for metabolites of cocaine, along with two other amateur jockeys.
