# Edwulf wins exciting Irish Gold Cup

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Edwulf won a very exciting Irish Gold Cup by a neck on Sunday.

An outsider, Edwulf went off at 33-1, ridden by Derek O’Connor just about held off Outlander in the final stages of the steeplechase.

It was a sentimental victory for the horse, as a fall at Cheltenham last year left veterinary practitioners working for an over an hour to save the life of the mare.

O’Brien, 24, has refused to rule out a return to Cheltenham for Edwulf, where he would compete in the Gold Cup.

The nine-year-old horse capitalised off a fall by well-placed Killultagh Vic, which left jockey Paul Townend requiring  [multiple scans on an injured ankle.](https://readhorseracing.com/2018/02/05/paul-townend-scans-ankle-injury/)

Of his victorious horse, O’Brien said:

> It’s been a long road to get him back from where he was at Cheltenham when we thought he was gone
>
> He ran himself into the ground for me at Cheltenham and we thought his career was over but he’s after coming back to his best
