# Baker facing long spell on the sidelines

He rode Harbour Law to victory in the Group One Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster in September, his first Classic success, but star flat rider George Baker now faces a long rehabilitation process after suffering a terrible fall at St Moritz on Sunday when riding Jamie Osborne’s Boomerang Bob on the ice track.

The horse sadly died from the incident and it was found that there was a crack in the ice which caused the incident in which two other horses were also involved in the melee but avoided injury. The rest of the meeting was abandoned.

Baker was taken to a hospital in Chur and tests revealed that the rider has suffered a bleed to his brain. Baker is one of Britain’s best flat jockeys and has primarily been riding on the All-Weather this winter but went over to ride for Osborne at the world famous track.

The Professional Jockeys Association released a statement, giving the latest update on Baker which said:

> Following a fall during the first race at St Moritz on Sunday, February 26, George Baker was transferred by air ambulance to Graubunden Hospital in Chur, Switzerland, where he has remained in a stable condition in intensive care. Having had CT scans earlier in the week, George underwent a MRI scan today.
>
> Following those MRI scan results, George has suffered from some bleeding in the brain and we are anticipating a long rehabilitation process, but are hopeful that he will make a positive recovery. George will remain in hospital in Switzerland whilst arrangements are made for his return home to commence his rehabilitation.
>
> George’s family would like to express their thanks for all the kind messages of support and would appreciate privacy at this difficult time.
