# Star sprinter Sole Power retired

There was not many better sights in racing than seeing sprint superstar Sole Power scythe through the field in flat racing’s biggest Group One sprints. Sadly, that will be an image we will no longer see on the racetrack as the multiple Grade One superstar has been retired by trainer Eddie Lynam.

The 10-year-old son of Kyllachy shocked the racing world with a length and a quarter victory at York at odds of 100/1 in the Grade One Nunthorpe Stakes. In 2011, Sole Power won the Temple Stakes before a phenomenal run of form in the 2013 season which saw him land the Group Three Palace House, two other Group Three victories and score in the Grade One King’s Stand Stakes under Johnny Murtagh. Later on that season, Lynam’s charge scored a decisive victory in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes.

Sole Power went on to record back-to-back victories in the King’s Stand Stakes in the 2014 renewal before another stellar season that year also saw him win the Diamond Jubille Stakes just four days later, the Darley July Cup and then his second Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes in Augusr 2014.

In 2015, the gelding won the Al Quoz Sprint in March and last recorded a victory in the Group Two Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes.

A truly remarkable career with 12 career wins and nearly £2.1 million in prize money now comes to an end with Lynam paying warm tribute to his stable star.

The County Meath handler commented:

> He’s been a wonderful horse and he’s going out on his own terms as he’s totally sound. His form up to 2015 had been at a very high level, but his form has dipped in recent years as, like all of us, he’s got slower as he’s got older.

> I’ve never trained a more genuine, happier and sounded horse than Sole Power. I’ve been training since I was 21 and I’m 55 now. I was a nobody until he came around and he’s taken me to places I never felt were possible to go to. His CV was always strong, but on top of that, he was a really popular horse.

Sole Power will move to Horse Park Stud in County Wicklow where he will spend his retirement.
