Many Clouds’ heartbreaking death explained

After the tragic death of one of the sport’s most recognised horses, it has been revealed that Many Clouds suffered a severe pulmonary haemorrhage on Saturday at Cheltenham.

After battling back bravely to pip Thistlecrack on the line in the Cotswold Chase on Cheltenham Festival Trials Day, Many Clouds collapsed and was eventually pronounced dead.

It was news that struck the very core of racing. He was exactly as trainer Oliver Sherwood described him: “a horse of a lifetime”.

The Grand National winner in 2015 left behind some priceless memories for all connections concerned, ones they will inevitably remember forever.

One key piece of information revealed by the post mortem was that Many Clouds died of the haemorrhage (bleeding on the lungs) and had no underlying health issues that impacted that.

In a glittering career, sadly ended too soon, the Trevor Hemmings-owned horse won the Hennessey Gold Cup in 2014 and the Gold Cup trial in 2015, amongst other big races.

It’s a sad day for race fans but it proves there is a sharp end to this sport, one that rears its ugly head very infrequently – but still too often.
