AP McCoy: Better weight advice could have extended my career
Twenty-time champion jockey AP McCoy believes that he could have potentially extended his prestigious career had he been given better support to healthily manage his weight, BBC report.
McCoy, who announced his retirement three years ago admitted he done “everything you probably shouldn’t do” while racing.
McCoy took part in a special programme designed by Liverpool John Moores University towards the end of his career which helps jockeys lose weight safely.
Unfortunately I went there [LJMU] at the latter part of my career, when I was near retirement, but I went there because I was interested. Maybe I could’ve been so much better if I’d had the access to something like this earlier.
The average weight of a jockey is about the same as a 13-year-old boy and McCoy admitted he may have been able to extend his career if he started the programme earlier.
McCoy, who was knighted in 2016, said he “made weight” for races unhealthily by having hot baths, running with sweat suits on, and using saunas.
